WWW: What Your Body Really Can Do: Keep Going

Part 1

It is all about mental tenacity. It is the ability to manage and thrive in pain and push through it. It makes people seem immortal. We look at Olympic and professional athletes and say they must be gifted and talented and naturals, so it’s easier for them. They are very talented, but it is definitely not easier. As you improve, it gets harder and harder to be faster and stronger and beat your own records. It took me months to PR on my power clean by 3 lbs. Trust me, I know. However, these athletes are able to mentally motivate themselves to continually push forward. They have to tell themselves that they are not tired and cannot slow down. They beat their own mind and perform to their maximum ability, and not just in the games and competition, but every single day at practice, when it counts and when no one is looking and you only have yourself to rely on.

This is what gets runners often times and makes it such a controversial sport. Most think that if they don’t have the energy or stamina to keep running or go harder, they need to train better. Yes, and no. You do need to get endurance down via training but you can never train your mind enough. It’s all a mind game, and the people that don’t get that naturally, struggle. I was fortunate enough that my dad was a coach and taught me at an early age how to trick my body. You use others to push yourself, you talk to yourself, coach yourself, encourage yourself, out-talk your screaming and tired body, give yourselves little goals, get on to yourself, and play all the mind games it takes. When you have no more oxygen and you can’t breathe or feel your legs, you have to have something to keep you going. Drew screams, grunts, yells, has guys yell at him, and listens to certain music. Some think it’s crazy, but I see it as the road to success and gains.

I know this all sounds great, but do people actually do this? Yes! It doesn’t take long to search them online. Michael Jordan played his best game in the NBA finals in 1997 with a vicious flu and high fever. He was even seen vomiting on the side lines. Curt Schilling who had to have a tendon stitched in his right ankle in 2004 in the ALC series came back and got the win still hurt. Rajon Rondo in 2011 of the ECS got a dislocated elbow and returned after a short time to get the win over the Miami Heat. Philip Rivers who played the 2007 AFC championship game with a torn ACL. Emmitt Smith overcame a dislocated shoulder and played the whole game with 229 yards in 1993. Steve Yzerman had such incredible knee pain that he could hardly walk and yet led the Red Wings to the 2002 Stanley Cup Championship. Donovan McNabb broke his ankle in 2002 and still had a great game. Kerri Strug in the 1996 Olympics injured her ankle but still landed her second vault landing to clinch the gold to the USA team. Ronnie Lott amputated his finger so he could stay in a football game! Jack Youngblood snapped his left fibula in 1979 and returned to the game and won the NFC title. Bobby Baun got his leg broke in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1964 on a slap shot and had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher but would return after taping it up and won the Stanley Cup. Clint Malarchuk had his throat slit by the skate of an opponent while playing goalie in 1989. Blood literally gushed all over the ice. The trainers saved his life and told him he was out for the season. He returned a few days later to play. I won’t even go on to mention all the athletes fighting cancer or have medical dsabilities or physical disabilities.

I’m so inspired hearing seeing what our bodies are capable of if we just let them! Don’t be scared. Reach for the stars. Test yourself and fail and maybe succeed. Go see what your body can REALLY do!
